20 In A it is said that âFinwë originally named his eldest son Finwëâ.
21 Curufinwë: the name has been met in the rejected addition to AAm where appear my father's first thoughts on the story of Fëanor's birth (when his mother was named Indis): see p. 87 note 3.
22 A has here a passage that was omitted in B:
Finwë then named his second son (by another mother, Indis) also Finwë, modifying it later to Nolofinwë. But the mother-name which Indis gave to him was Ingoldo, signifying that he was partly of both the Ingar (people of Ingwë), her own kin, and of the Noldor. By this name he also became generally known; though after the rule of the Noldor was committed to him by Manwë (in the place of his elder brother and his father) he took the name of Finwë, and was in fact usually called Ingoldo-finwë. Similarly the third son was Arafinwe and also Ingalaure (because he had the golden hair of his mother's kin). As in the name Noldor throughout the later texts, Nolofinwë is LawsB THE LATER QUENTA SILMARILLION (ll) 231
written with a tilde over the N. â On this passage see further
p. 265 note 10.
23 In A there is no subtitle here, but before âIt must be understood ...â there stands the following:
In what has been said concerning names it will be noted that for Finwë, first lord of the Noldor, two wives are named: Miriel and Indis; though it was said that the marriage of the Eldar is permanent and indissoluble.
24 After âand Deathâ there followed in B âin its Elvish modeâ, derived from A; but this was rejected as soon as typed.
25 A: âand is made also as it were of the hrÅn (or flesh and substance) of Ardaâ; cf. rhÅn âbodyâ, note 16. The word hrÅn was left unchanged in A here (see note 26); subsequently where B has hrondo (> hröa) A has hrÅn, hrón, and hrÅn (> hrondo), until later in the text hrondo appears in A as first written (note 34).
26 The words âand it returns again to the general hron of Ardaâ were added to the A-text at the same time as other occurrences of hron were changed to hrondo (note 25); thus hron here in B (subsequently > orma) represents a distinction between hron (of the âbodyâ of Arda) and hrondo. At a later point in the A manuscript there is the following hastily pencilled note, which was struck through:
Vs-ron âflesh, substance, matterâ. Q. hrÅn, hröm- âmatterâ, the substance of Arda, hence hrondo âphysical body, âthe fleshâ â.
27 B as typed had âlittle differentâ, as does A, but âlittleâ was at once changed to
âlessâ.
28 Where B has âeven from the first days' A has âeven at firstâ.
29 âas has been notedâ (not said in A): the previous references are on pp. 210
